I have read a couple of approaches to making and installing solid linings. What do you do and what tricks to you use. Do you notice a difference in the tone between solid and kerfed linings? Do you laminate the lining before installing or glue them in separately in the guitar? The radius on the back is puzzling to me. If I followed the edge contour of the back, as I did with the kerfed lining, the bottom edge of the solid linings do not sit flat against the sides. How do you handle that? |

Eddie, I contour the sides prior to putting the linings on, then plane the linings down to the side. This does make the linings taper in height when view from the inside of the guitar. There may be a better way to do this, but works pretty well if you don't mind the taper. I may be able to find some photos of my process on making them, but I'd have to post that later. |

Jim and Steve, Thanks for that inputs. I though that would be the easiest way, but was concerned the lining would be to "wide?" in some areas. I also considered doing the up bout and the lower bout separatly and piecing in the waist or using a strip of kerfed lining at the waist. Do you laminate the lining before installing or glue them in separately in the guitar? |

I laminate them on a form before installing. |

Alex, thank. I did find the first page of that post before but missed the 2nd. My question is, you glued up you laminate flat. In your picture, the laminate glued to the back looks like it is the same thickness/width all the way around the radius on the back. How did you do that? |

Here's the 2nd page. viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=45215&start=25 I skewed the linings a bit to keep them a bit wider. I'm planning on putting another layer of ply on my form to accommodate 1 1/4" high linings. Alex |

I use laminated sides these days on most instruments and use the same mold for laminating linings with a dummy side as a spacer. I typically make a layup 4-41/2" wide. I then use my top radius dish to transfer (plane/sand) the top radius onto both sides of the layup then take it over to the bandsaw and cut to the appropriate width, following the radius from both sides. I then repeat with the back radius. That way I end up with linings that are equal height all around (be sure to mark which lining goes where so you don't grab the wrong one at glue-up). |

I like to laminate two .100" layers of poplar in place. I glue in the .100" side supports. Then I glue in one layer between the supports. Then I glue in a continuous second layer over the first layer and the ends of the side supports. Then I carve and sand the linings to a final shape. The linings are let in to the end blocks. |
